MA-Registered Trailers May Need a Pseudo VIN

Posted by MAIA on October 11, 2019

REgNewsTrailerVINImageAs of November 12, 2019, the MA RMV requires commercially used trailers that are subject to annual inspections to have a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). If such a trailer does NOT have a VIN, it will have a “Pseudo VIN” assigned by the RMV, which will be printed on 2020 trailer registration renewal applications upon registration or registration renewal. The Pseudo VIN will begin with the letters “MATR” followed by 13 digits. Prior to a trailer inspection, the assigned VIN must be machine-stamped, die-punched, etched, or otherwise attached to the trailer tongue.

To determine whether this ruling applies, read this RMV document:  DOES MY TRAILER NEED AN INSPECTION?
