PFML Update: Implementation Delay & Rate Increase

Posted by MAIA on June 19, 2019

Implementation of the MA Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) has been delayed for three months. While this gives MA employers a little extra time to meet their new responsibilities under the law, it also means the withholding rate will increase from .63% to .75%, as the state has to raise as much revenue in 15 months as they expected to raise in 18 months.

    • The effective start date for required MA PFML contributions is now October 1, 2019 (extended from July 1).
    • Employers now have until by September 30, 2019, to notify their workforce.
    • Employers who had already notified their workforce will now need to send an update. (So much for being proactive!)
