Special Bulletin: Insurance Agents ARE Essential

Posted by MAIA on March 23, 2020

For more recent information, please read this post from 3/24/20:
Yes, the Governor Deemed Insurance an Essential Business
No, That Does Not Mean Your Agency Must Stay Open

Governor Baker this morning (3/23/20) mandated that all non-essential businesses in MA shut down. However, MAIA has just confirmed that insurance agencies ARE considered essential services, so you are NOT mandated to close your business. However, this does NOT mean you HAVE to be open; it just means you don't HAVE to close.

Many agencies had already put alternative work arrangements in place prior to today's order, and these are still acceptable. Options include remote work, limited hours, locking doors to restrict face-to-face customer contact, serving customers by appointment only, etc.

Agency owners are free to decide how and if they will operate their businesses.
